 De Amerikaanse schrijfster Meg Wolitzer (°1959) heeft een nieuw boek uit, ‘The Uncoupling. Het verhaal: een nieuwe dramalerares beslist om in de Stellar Plains High School (New Jersey) het stuk ‘Lysistrata' op te voeren. Daarmee lijkt er een vloek over de school neergedaald. Lysistrata... ja, dat was die komedie van Aristophanes waarin de vrouwen de Peloponnesische Oorlog stopten via een seksstaking! Die seksstaking waarmee ook Senator Marleen Temmerman haar collega-politici tevergeefs aanporde om een Belgische regering te vormen.
Recensente Zosia Bielski schrijft in het New Yorkse The globe and Mail (23/3/2011) over dit boek:
"The women of Stellar Plains, N.J., stopped having sex in December, when a bitter wind blasted through their homes and under their bedsheets. "All over that town," Meg Wolitzer writes in her new novel, The Uncoupling, "you could hear the word ‘no,'" as women gave "their husbands or partners or boyfriends the long flat of the back like a door in the face."
Women have used "sex strikes" throughout history, most recently this February, when Belgian senator Marleen Temmerman playfully - and unsuccessfully - called on the spouses of politicians to "withhold sex" until that country picked a government. Ms. Temmerman, a gynecologist, got the idea from Kenyan women, who had organized a week-long sex strike in 2009 to protest political infighting."
Nick Hornby schreef over het boek in The Believer: "The Uncoupling is a novel that can't help but make you think about your own relationship--about what it consists of, what would be left if sex were taken away, how far you'd be prepared to go in order to keep it in your life somewhere, and so on."
Marleen Temmerman zet het boek van Meg Wolitzer, zeker op haar leeslijstje voor komende zomer.
